Wednesday's Saints

August 2011

All Christians are called through the Baptismal Covenant to live out diakonia through what they do and how they live their daily life in the world.
Have you noticed the names of the saints on the Episcopal calendar? As a part of my prayer life I try to read about the saint of the day each day. On Wednesday nights starting in June, I have been sharing a meditation on the saint of the day during the Healing Service and Eucharist.

In June we celebrated Evelyn Underhill (pronounced Eve-Lynn) it is important to remember that mystical life is not open only to a saintly few, but to anyone who cares to nurture it and weave it into everyday experience. Alban, the first English martyr whom we are named for, is depicted with a sword and a fountain, which are his symbols, in our own stained glass window. Peter and Paul are almost exact mirror opposites in every facet of their lives except their love and devotion to Christ.

Harriet Tubman

July brought the celebrations of many saints that were memorable in their own way. John Huss, whose last name means goose was teased when he was burned at the stake which is where the expression "having one's goose cooked" comes from.

William Reed Huntington

Conrad Weiser served as negotiator and translator for the Iroquois nation.

He was one of sixteen siblings he and wife Anna had fourteen children of their own. Elizabeth Cady Stanton deleted the word "obey" from her marriage vows. Amelia Bloomer designed baggy underpants to be worn under long skirts and dresses to combat the filth left by horses in the streets. Sojourner Truth spoke only Dutch until she was nine and learned English. Harriet Tubman served as a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War.

These are tidbits about people just like you and me. I have enjoyed sharing them with you and look forward to our journey of continued sharing.

Peace
